Graduate Student Employment

Our department offers a variety of graduate assistant experiences to help students living in our residential communities be successful. Graduate students play an integral role in the success of our department, from assistant resident directors to central office graduate assistants. Central Office Worker
The office assistants act as our ambassadors to the University of Pittsburgh campus community. At times, the office assistant is the first person a visitor may come into contact with while visiting campus. Students will use their knowledge of both the campus and the city to help students, faculty, and staff successfully get answers they are looking for. Student employees should develop appropriate customer service skills including: greeting visitors, answering questions, and using proper phone etiquette. In addition to these responsibilities, the office assistant is also expected to maintain and execute the list of daily and weekly duties, remain alert and respond appropriately to emergency situations, be familiar with Residence Life resources, and assist our staff with additional assignments as needed.
This position is for work-study eligible students.
Professional Staff
The following positions comprise the professional staff of Residence Life and often have full-time openings:
- Assistant Director (AD)
- Area Coordinator (AC)
- Resident Director (RD)
Resident Directors
Resident Directors (RDs) are professional live-in staff members who oversee communities ranging in size from 230 – 930 students in a mix of traditional housing and suite-style living. Each RD supervises a team of Resident Assistants (RAs) in one of our on-campus communities. RDs are a main part of the Residential Life & Education team within the Office of Residence Life and primarily focus on administrative responsibilities, staff supervision, and community development.

This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position with a flexible and individualized schedule. - Recruit, train, and supervise para-professional staff members

- Assess student learning and adjust programs and services to meet student needs

- Advise a student organization (Hall Council, National Residence Hall Honorary, Resident Student Association)
- Manage programmatic budgets for assigned areas

- Qualifications

Master’s degree (preferred) and relative experience in student affairs or a related field providing student programming and support in higher education.
