Many jobs and internships in the US require prior professional experience. However, many international students do not enter college with prior work experience from high school due to different curriculums. This program gives first-year and transfer international students first-time on-campus employment opportunities. We help students with the resume creation, interview preparation, and application processes during our Resume & Employment Workshop. Students are assigned to one-year student worker positions in various offices and departments at the university. Students participating in this program have grown in English language communication skills, developed an understanding for American work culture, and gained basic clerical and office work skills. We hope that this job experience will be a step that leads to more jobs in the future for the students.
The Global Professionals Team (GPT Program) is a unique program created to employ new (first-year and transfer) international students in an effort to support them in their English language skills, professional development, and connection to Pitt. Students who are not eligible for this program can still find on-campus employment by visiting the Career Center, located on the 2nd floor of the William Pitt Union.
Students who are eligible for this program are:
- First-year Pitt international, undergraduate students (Sorry—no exchange, ELI, graduate, or non-first-year students).
- Students with no prior work experience in the US.
- Students with a clear need to improve conversational English skills.
All new international students will receive email updates about the program.
Training and Support
GPT students will participate in a series of trainings to help prepare them for their first on-campus job in the United States. OIB staff are here to support new international student workers as they get settled in their first campus job. They will be available to assist with onboarding and answer questions regarding on-campus employment and work etiquette in the United States.
