Facilities

Below are the recreational facilities we manage and make available to the University community.

Available to students.

Located on the food court level of the Petersen Events Center, this 40,000 square foot space is the University's largest and most popular fitness facility. Available only to current Pitt undergraduate and graduate students, the Rec Center features a large collection of cardio equipment, free weights and strength machines. The facility houses racquetball and squash courts, a group fitness/dance studio, multi-purpose room, matted area for calisthenics and stretching and a functional fitness area. 

There are also shower/changing rooms and day use lockers. The Department of Campus Recreation main office suite is located in this facility.

Constructed in 1924 and originally owned by the Y.M.H.A., Bellefield Hall is recognized as a historic landmark by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. This building was acquired by the University of Pittsburgh in the mid-1990s and is now used for various purposes such as music recitals, office space and recreational programming. 

The Department of Campus Recreation manages several areas of Bellefield Hall including a small fitness center & weight room, four lane 25-yard lap pool, group exercise/dance studio, a small mat room, and locker rooms/changing areas with day use lockers. The facility also houses a newly renovated gymnasium open for recreational basketball, volleyball or other group activities.

Use of this facility is by reservation only.

Named after former Pitt running back Charles L. Cost, the Cost Sports Center is an indoor athletic facility with an artificial turf surface that houses a regulation size football field. Formerly used by the University of Pittsburgh Football Team, this facility is now shared by Varsity Athletics and Campus Recreation. 

The Cost Center is used year round by Campus Recreation to run intramural sports leagues, as well as schedule practices and games for recreational and competitive club sports teams.

Constructed in 1951, this multi-purpose athletic facility was dedicated to Rufus Fitzgerald, past chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh. The Field House is primarily used by several Varsity Athletics sports teams for training and competitions, but is shared with the Department of Campus Recreation for intramural and club programming. 

Facilities within the Field House used by Campus Recreation include a 200 meter indoor running track, 3 hardwood volleyball courts, 6 North American squash courts and a balcony area with multipurpose flooring lined for badminton. 

Spaces Available for Registration: Balcony, Squash Courts, Volleyball Courts 

This space is available for open recreation and by reservation. 

Available to students.

Constructed in 2010, the Outdoor Courts are used for basketball, volleyball and general recreation. The courts feature four permanently fixed basketball hoops and four portable volleyball net uprights. The flat, paved surface is lined, allowing for two full-court basketball or volleyball games to take place. Other activities such as skateboarding, roller hockey and bike polo are permitted.

Completed in the Spring of 2017, the Pitt Sports Dome is the newest edition to Campus Recreation's growing number of athletic & recreational facilities. Located on the back end of upper campus, the complex features a state-of-the-art air supported structure that houses a full size football, soccer, and lacrosse field, as well as three outdoor playing fields. The facility is primarily used for student activities such as intramural sports leagues, open recreation and student-run club sports teams.

Constructed in 1962 and named after University of Pittsburgh alumnus and benefactor Joseph C. Trees, this multi-purpose facility is a popular spot for exercise and recreational activity among undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff. In addition to the Department of Campus Recreation, Trees Hall is utilized by the Department of Health and Physical Activity and Varsity Athletics. 

The facilities in Trees Hall managed by Campus Recreation include three full-sized basketball courts, a multipurpose room with matted flooring, an indoor climbing wall with an enclosed golf driving area and putting green, nine racquetball courts, an Olympic-size swimming pool, locker rooms and a fitness center complete with cardio equipment, free weights and strength machines. Towel service is available at this facility.

Dedicated in 1962 to Joseph C. Trees, this facility serves as the main aquatics site for Campus Recreation, Varsity Athletics and the Department of Health and Physical Activity.

The facility consists of two adjoining pools. The large pool is Olympic-size (50 meters by 25 yards), equipped with spring boards and a 10 meter platform, and serves as the primary pool for recreational swimming, team practices and competitions. The small pool consists of six 25-yard lanes and is used to supplement additional programming such as water aerobics and swim lessons.

The Trees Climbing Wall offers undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty with a wide range of climbing opportunities including bouldering and top rope. Regardless of climbing experience, the climbing wall has a route suitable for you! When you arrive at the climbing wall, our student staff will help acclimate you to the facility by providing a knowledge and skills test, recommend best practices, and answer any questions you may have. The climbing wall is also open to scheduled group events with accommodations for up to 25 participants at a time. Don’t have climbing gear? Not a problem! We offer equipment rentals for any climbing gear you may need during your time at the climbing wall. Check out our rental guide.

Originally opening as a Hotel in 1898, the William Pitt Union has been transformed into the center of student involvement at Pitt. 

The Fitness Center, located on the 3rd floor consists almost entirely of cardio equipment, it also contains an aerobic/dance room and studio cycling room used for calisthenics and group exercise classes

Available to faculty and staff.

Located at Trees Hall, Ignite Fitness is a membership-based boutique style gym and fitness studio. It is managed by School of Education faculty and graduate students with degrees in the health, fitness, and wellness fields. Access to this space is available to University of Pittsburgh faculty and staff, UPMC employees, and Veterans Affairs (VA) employees.

Available to students.

Located in every on-campus residence hall, the 24-Hour Fitness Centers provide students the opportunity to get a quick workout in, at any time of the day or night, without having to leave their residence. Each fitness center contains a small selection of cardio equipment, and is only accessible to the students living in that residence hall.

The Pitt Bike Cave is an open-air, student-run, DIY bike shop located in the Posvar Passage between Posvar Hall and David L. Lawrence Hall.   

Stop by the Pitt Bike Cave to buy a bike or bike accessories, fix your bike with our tools, donate bikes or bike parts, or have your bike repaired by one of our trained student bike mechanics!

Equipment Check-Out

While you are in our facilities, we have a limited supply of workout equipment that you can use such as weightlifting belts, chain belts, racquetball equipment, and table tennis. To borrow any of the items, you must hand your Pitt ID to the Member Services Attendant at the Member Services Desk so that they check-out the item under your account. To return the borrowed item, hand your Pitt ID to the Member Services Attendant so that they can check-in the item in your account. The items are free for you to use for the duration of your workout and must be returned prior to exiting the facility.

Equipment Rentals

Campus Recreation has a limited number of lawn games that can be rented such as Cornhole, Spikeball, and Giant Jenga. You can rent out these items to take and use off-site for an outdoor event. If you are interested in renting out lawn games for an upcoming event, please submit a game rental form.
